The Mining for
Water Challenge leverages the resources of the global exploration
and mining industry to substantially improve the quality of life in
developing countries by contributing time, money and resources to
providing clean water. This Challenge was inspired by the efforts of
14 year-old Ryan Hreljac and his Ryan's Well Foundation, and
initiated by Orezone Resources Inc.
The Mining for
Water Challenge targets the global mining community, including
exploration and mining companies, drilling contractors, brokers,
agents, lawyers and other service providers. Participants can
contribute to water projects in the developing world by drilling
wells themselves or by donating to the Ryan's Well Foundation.
The objectives are:
1.
To raise funds to support
wells and water points in the developing world.
2.
To provide in-kind
services and resources to support community-based projects in areas
of the developing world where mining companies operate.
Each project is
reviewed to ensure that wells drilled are properly situated and
equipped to maximize the sustainable benefits to the local
community. Projects can include shallow and deep wells, pipelines,
water treatment facilities, as well as sanitation/hygiene training and
education on water point maintenance.
Today, the Mining
for Water Challenge continues to answer the call and has become a
focused initiative dedicated to increasing and highlighting the
mining community’s contribution to water and sanitation issues in
the developing world.
